The four costs of vehicle ownership.

Most car loan calculators only show the loan payment. But in BC, your real monthly vehicle cost includes four major components: the loan payment, ICBC insurance (mandatory Basic Autoplan plus optional coverage), fuel, and maintenance. This guide helps you estimate all four so you can budget realistically before applying. Loan Payment: depends on vehicle price, down payment, interest rate, and term. Use our payment calculator for exact numbers. As a quick reference: a $15,000 vehicle at 14.99% for 60 months = ~$357/month.

Loan payment estimation.

A $20,000 vehicle at the same terms = ~$476/month. A $25,000 vehicle = ~$594/month. ICBC Insurance: Basic Autoplan is mandatory. Costs depend on your driving experience, vehicle value, and optional coverage chosen. New drivers: $250โ€“$400/month. Experienced drivers with clean records: $150โ€“$250/month.

ICBC insurance in BC.

Adding collision and comprehensive is strongly recommended for financed vehicles (your lender may require it) and adds $50โ€“$125/month. See our ICBC guide for detailed breakdowns. Fuel: depends on your commute distance, vehicle fuel efficiency, and BC gas prices. At $1.65/L average with 12L/100km consumption and 1,500km/month driving: ~$297/month. A fuel-efficient vehicle at 7L/100km: ~$173/month. An EV charging at home: ~$40/month.

Fuel and maintenance budgets.

See our EV guide if considering electric. Maintenance: budget $50โ€“$100/month for oil changes, tires, brakes, and unexpected repairs. Newer vehicles with warranty need less. Older vehicles (10+ years, 150,000+km) may need more. Total monthly cost example: $20,000 vehicle financed at 14.99% for 60 months. Payment: $476.

Putting it all together.

Insurance: $200. Fuel: $220. Maintenance: $75. Total: $971/month. This is the number you should compare to your income โ€” not just the $476 payment. Use the 15โ€“20% rule: if your gross monthly income is $4,000, your total vehicle budget should be $600โ€“$800/month. Adjust the vehicle price, down payment, or term until the total fits your budget. Then apply for pre-approval to find out your actual rate and approved amount.

Common questions.

Loan payment plus ICBC insurance ($150-$400) plus fuel ($100-$250) plus maintenance ($50-$100). A $20,000 financed vehicle typically costs $900-$1,100/month total.
Total vehicle costs should not exceed 15-20% of gross monthly income. On $4,000/month income aim for $600-$800 total including payment insurance and fuel.
