Why are some cars easier to get approved for?
Lenders assess both the borrower and the vehicle. A vehicle with strong resale value, low repair costs, and wide market demand is less risky for the lender — which means they are more willing to approve it for buyers with challenging credit. Think of it as the vehicle providing extra security for the loan.
The easiest vehicles to get approved for in BC
Based on our experience across 30+ lenders, these are the consistently easiest approvals:
- Toyota Corolla (2017–2022): The single most approved vehicle in our network. Strong resale, cheap to insure and maintain, lenders love the collateral.
- Honda Civic (2018–2022): Very similar profile to the Corolla. Slightly higher market demand makes it equally easy to approve.
- Hyundai Elantra (2018–2021): Lower purchase price means a smaller loan and a higher approval rate. Reliable and cheap to run.
- Kia Rio / Kia Soul (2018–2021): Budget-friendly, very low loan amounts, approved regularly even for the most challenged credit profiles.
- Dodge Grand Caravan (2017–2020): High family vehicle demand, lower price point, approved regularly even for bad credit buyers.
- Toyota RAV4 (2018–2020): The easiest SUV to get approved for. Strong resale, massive market demand, lenders are comfortable with the collateral.
What vehicles are hardest to get approved for with bad credit?
Luxury vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Audi), sports cars, and very high-mileage vehicles are the hardest to approve for bad credit buyers. Lenders see lower resale value and higher risk. We always recommend starting with a reliable practical vehicle — rebuild your credit, then upgrade on better terms in 2–3 years.
Does the vehicle year affect approval odds?
Yes. Most lenders prefer vehicles under 10 years old and under 150,000 km. The newer and lower-mileage the vehicle, the easier the approval. For the best combination of payment amount and approval rate, aim for 2018–2022 model years with under 100,000 km.
