Moving to British Columbia without Canadian credit history is one of the most common challenges newcomers face when they need a vehicle. Whether you landed last month or last year, the lack of a Canadian credit file does not mean you cannot get approved for auto financing. Our lending partners understand this situation and have built programs specifically for it. Whether you're a permanent resident, work permit holder, international student, or refugee, our lending partners have newcomer-specific programs that don't require Canadian credit history.
What lenders look for from newcomers: valid Canadian work permit or PR card, proof of employment in Canada (letter + recent pay stub), proof of BC residence, and a valid driver's licence (international is accepted while you obtain your BC licence).
Rates for newcomers typically range 9.99–19.99%, depending on income level, down payment, and documentation quality. See our rate guide and Canada-wide newcomer guide for more detail.
BC-specific requirements for newcomers.
Driver's licence: BC allows new residents to drive on their foreign licence for up to 90 days. After that, you need a BC driver's licence. Some lenders will approve financing before you have a BC licence, but delivery requires valid insurance.
ICBC insurance: Basic Autoplan is mandatory. Newcomers without a Canadian driving record may pay higher insurance premiums initially. ICBC recognizes driving experience from many countries — bring your driving abstract from your home country. See our ICBC guide.
Documents checklist: Work permit/PR card, employment letter, pay stubs, BC address proof, and SIN number. Full list in our documents checklist.
Down payment expectations for newcomers.
Without Canadian credit history, a down payment is one of the strongest signals you can send to a lender. While some newcomer programs accept zero down with strong income documentation, putting $1,000–$3,000 down typically results in better rates and more vehicle options.
If you're building savings before applying, even $500 helps. The down payment reduces the financed amount, which lowers both your monthly payment and the total interest you'll pay over the term. Use our payment calculator to see the difference various down payment amounts make.
Some newcomers also explore trade-in options if they purchased a vehicle shortly after arriving. See our trade-in page for how that process works.
Building Canadian credit after your first loan.
Your first Canadian auto loan is one of the most effective ways to establish a credit file. Each on-time monthly payment is reported to both Equifax and TransUnion — Canada's two main credit bureaus. After 12–18 months of consistent payments, you'll have a meaningful Canadian credit history.
Additional steps to build credit faster: open a Canadian bank account (most newcomers do this early), apply for a secured credit card ($300–$500 limit), and keep utilization below 30% on all revolving credit. Together with your auto loan payments, these steps can build a score above 650 within 12–18 months.
Once your score improves, refinancing your car loan at a significantly lower rate becomes a realistic option — potentially saving you hundreds or thousands in remaining interest. See our full credit-building guide.
