Mechanical inspection: Start the engine cold — listen for unusual sounds during startup. Check the transmission: smooth shifting through all gears with no clunks, grinding, or hesitation. Test brakes at various speeds — they should be smooth, quiet, and straight. Check the steering for play or vibration.

Have an independent mechanic perform a pre-purchase inspection ($100–$200) — this is the single best investment you can make when buying used. Documentation: Request the vehicle history report (Carfax or equivalent). Check for liens registered against the vehicle through ICBC or a PPSA search.
